Koh-I Nor*****
# CollectionPerched at 7,500 feet of elevation at the top of Val Thorens, the Koh-I Nor Hotel is the highest five-star hotel in Europe. This exceptional location is made even more impressive by the building’s architecture and its sweeping views over the world’s largest ski area, Les 3 Vallées. Built with wood and glass, it has a one-of-a-kind aesthetic complemented by its tower and immense, floor-to-ceiling windows cut in the style of a precious gemstone. Koh-I Nor, meaning “Mountain of Light” in Persian, is the name of the 105.6 carat diamond adorning the centre of King Charles III’s crown, part of the collection of the British royal family’s crown jewels kept at the Tower of London. Bathed in light and as magnificent as a diamond itself, the daringly designed building is fitted with countless balconies and terraces enabling guests to take full advantage of the panorama. This cosy, luxury refuge is an invitation to stay wrapped up warm indoors! Aside from its 63 rooms and suites, and its 25 apartments boasting welcoming, sophisticated interior design, the Koh-I Nor also features an 8,600ft² spa with facilities including two pools, a sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, a salt wall, an ice fountain, sensory showers, a fitness suite, a relaxation room and a solarium. The peak of wellness!
Gastronomy also reaches new heights thanks to chef Éric Samson, who has developed the cuisine served at L’Atelier d’Éric. This includes a five-course dinner and the Diamant Noir tasting menu, for which the chef works with and showcases a refined selection of luxury, seasonal ingredients. As always, guests can enjoy the spectacular mountain views while they eat, awakening all their senses at once! Little ones are also catered for at the Koh-I Nor, with a children’s menu and a vast choice of products adapted to infants. After a quick break on the sunny, panoramic terrace, it is time to step out and take full advantage of the 330 pistes in the world’s biggest ski area, set in a breathtaking natural environment!
Designed with its guests’ comfort in mind, the Koh-I Nor has also not forgotten about the planet! As soon as the first plans for the Koh-I Nor were drawn up, the owners – who are passionate about sustainable development – decided to integrate clean, renewable energy into the hotel’s everyday operations. As a result, 650ft² of solar thermal panels take care of part of the hotel’s hot water production, and guarantee almost total energy independence during the interseason period – a remarkable feat at this elevation!
To support their efforts to improve the energy footprint of the hotel, which is guaranteed by the French BBC 2005 Label, the architects also decided to reorganize seasonal workers’ accommodation to avoid the overuse of cars between the resort and the hotel.
