Address book – Aix-les-Bains
TerritoryFrom interior design to cakes and restaurants, there are so many great spots around the Lac du Bourget. Here are a few must-visit places to add to your wish list.
Run by two chocolate masters, Cakao is somewhere you just have to stop and discover the “Dent du Chat”, a praline-filled chocolate topped with a roasted Piedmont hazelnut for the dark version, and an almond for the milk version. You can indulge in a box of 6 or 24 – who said chocolate had to be enjoyed responsibly? We know which one we’d choose!
4bis Rue Claude de Seyssel, 73100 Aix-les-Bains, +33 (0)4 79 88 31 73
Romain Guibert is a gifted, young cheesemonger with milk running through his veins. Don’t think twice about slipping the holy trinity of AOP-label Savoie cheeses into your basket: Reblochon, Tomme and Beaufort. If you want to taste the most traditional flavours of the local terroir, opt for a Tome des Bauges or a Chevrotin, two smaller-scale appellations that have earned their cheesy stripes! And our favourite cheese from off the beaten track is the Grataron d’Arêches. Bon appétit!
8 Square Jean Moulin, 73100 Aix-les-Bains, +33 (0)4 79 88 48 86
Make your way past the tip of the lake towards the capital of the old Dukes of Savoie, and drop into the shop owned by Cédric Pernot, pastry chef-extraordinaire. Whether layered cakes, small gateaux, macarons, or chocolates, you can’t go wrong! If you only try one thing, we recommend Le Candide, a Manjari chocolate mousse with vanilla crème brûlée, Breton shortbread and chocolate biscuit.
15 Rue de Boigne, 73000 Chambéry, +33 (0)4 79 70 22 62
With their Pop Art aesthetic, comic-book inspirations, and off-piste humour as sharp as a ski’s edge, the illustrations by Black Peuf breathe new life into the alpine interior design world. The shop in La Ravoire is brimming with pictures, posters, throw rugs, cushions, lamps, and trendy textiles. Everything you need to give your home a modern, mountain-chalet twist.
1304 RN 6, 73490 LA RAVOIRE, +33 (0)4 79 85 20 63
Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf? Instead of a wolf, this mountain restaurant in a forest clearing is home to a constantly friendly atmosphere. With a wooden interior, cheesy Savoyard specialties, local wines, and axe-throwing events on Friday evenings, a festive ambiance is guaranteed! Don’t leave without trying a glass of SensAlpes, a regional, mojito-inspired aperitif made with génépi.
La Féclaz La Gornaz, the Accrobranche car park, 73230 La Féclaz, +33 (0)9 65 25 29 68.
A waterfront slice of paradise
Boasting the “Petite Cité de Caractère” label, Chanaz runs along the Canal de Savière, where the Lac du Bourget and the Rhone River meet. With historical buildings, chalets on stilts, a maze of alleyways and talented artisans, Chanaz is worth its weight in astonishment. We recommend getting lost in its streets while remembering to look up!
The Chanaz Mill: This magnificently restored watermill from 1868 showcases the milling profession. Walnuts and hazelnuts pass under the millstone, operated by a bucket wheel. When the nuts have been pressed, the result is an artisanal, purely traditional oil, from Chanaz with love.
La Miellerie: Located on a river boat, this artisanal honey shop is an Aladdin’s cave of pots of every flavour, preserves, jams, and gingerbreads. There is also royal jelly, pollen and propolis for stocking up the medicine cabinet. La Miellerie also organises educational visits to its hives. A must-see.
La Brûlerie: Visitors are drawn here by the scent of roasted coffee. From grands crus to pure single-origin coffee, the roastery in Chanaz offers a whole host of beautiful blends from carefully selected beans. This enchanting, sensory world is certainly worth the trip. Coffee and beans available.
